Für die Familie Huang heißt es Abschied nehmen von Washington. Jessica (Constance Wu) und Louis (Randall Park) ziehen mit ihren Kindern Eddie (Hudson Yang), Emery (Forrest Wheeler) und Evan (Ian Chen) nach Florida, um dort ein Steakhouse zu übernehmen. Ebenfalls mit im Gepäck: Grandma Huang (Lucille Soong), die Englisch zwar durchaus versteht, aber dennoch beharrlich nur Mandarin spricht. Der Start im neuen Leben verläuft zunächst äußerst holprig. Nicht nur bleiben die Gäste für das Steakhouse zunächst aus, auch in der Schule und in der Nachbarschaft machen die kulturellen Unterschiede den Anfang nicht gerade leicht.

Michael Bolton offers to step in at the restaurant to give Louis more time with his family, but does he have an ulterior motive?

It’s the first day of high school and Eddie wants to join the football team to impress girlfriend Alison, despite Jessica forbidding him to try out. Emery finds out that Evan has been moved up a grade and is in middle school with him. Louis battles with Kenny Roger’s right-hand man over changes at the steakhouse

With the realization that Eddie is finally mature enough to be left on his own, Louis and Jessica see the light at the end of their parenting tunnel and make plans to spend more time with friends Honey and Marvin. Jessica schlägt ihrer Freundin Honey vor, eine alte chinesische Tradition nach der Geburt ihres Kindes bei ihr anzuwenden. Was das allerdings für die frisch gebackene Mutter tatsächlich bedeutet, erklärt ihr Jessica erst später. Louis will unterdessen die Vater-Sohn-Beziehung zu Evan verbessern.

Die Halloween-Matratze
Während sich der Huang-Nachwuchs auf Halloween freut, bieten sich Jessica und Louis ihren Nachbarn als Babysitter an, um nicht mitfeiern zu müssen. Sie versprechen Honey und Marvin, dass sie ihrem Patenkind Maria bei der Gelegenheit den Schnuller abgewöhnen können. Bei ihren eigenen Kindern haben sie das auch in nur einer Nacht geschafft – zumindest ihrer vagen Erinnerung nach. Dass sich damals alles ganz anders abgespielt hat, kommt erst nach und nach ans Tageslicht.

Eddie freut sich schon riesig auf seinen Führerschein und die damit bevorstehende Unabhängigkeit. Allerdings sieht er sich mit etlichen Vorurteilen konfrontiert – heißt es doch oft, dass Chinesen nicht zu den besten Autofahrern zählen. Louis will ihm helfen, diese Theorie zu widerlegen.

Der Volkszählungs-Trick
Evan erzählt seinem Vater voller Euphorie, dass er bei seiner Volkszählung eine weitere chinesische Familie entdeckt hat. Das ist für die Huangs ist solches Highlight, dass sich Louis und Jessica gleich auf den Weg zu ihnen machen. Die beiden Familien teilen die gleichen Ansichten und verstehen sich auf Anhieb. Doch die Harmonie währt nicht lange. Emery und Eddie haben unterdessen einen ausgeklügelten Plan entworfen, um ungestraft heimlich in den Nachbar-Pools zu schwimmen.

Irische Zwillinge
Jessicas Buch ist gefloppt, was die ehrgeizige Mutter von drei Kindern in ein tiefes Loch stürzt. Um sich wieder besser zu fühlen, macht sie sich auf die Suche nach den Unzulänglichkeiten ihrer Mitmenschen, die sie ihnen dann in aller Ausführlichkeit vorhalten kann. Unter anderem bringt sie dadurch Lous dazu, abnehmen zu wollen. Und auch Honey möchte ihre Babypfunde loswerden. Dann erhält sie jedoch eine Nachricht, die alles verändert.

Jessica will unbedingt Vorsitzende des Elternbeirats werden. Leider ist sie auf die Zustimmung von Amy Chestnut angewiesen – und die ist eine harte Nuss. Indes träumen Eddie und Trent immer noch von einem eigenen Auto, doch das nötige Kleingeld fehlt. Eddie arbeitet also weiterhin im Matratzenladen, während Trent im Cattlemans jobbt. Schon bald ist Louis begeistert von seinem neuen Mitarbeiter, woraufhin Eddie mit Eifersucht auf seinen Freund reagiert.

Jessica liebt Weihnachten über alles und ist deshalb wenig erfreut, dass Eddie von seiner Freundin Nicole über die Feiertage nach New York eingeladen wird. Eddie hat einen neuen Job als Essenslieferant. Dabei wird er von Grandma begleitet, da er nur unter Aufsicht eines Erwachsenen Auto fahren darf. Gleich bei der ersten Auslieferung kommt es zu Meinungsverschiedenheiten zwischen den beiden. Louis und Jessica haben bei einem Gewinnspiel einen Kurztrip ins Sandturtles-Resort gewonnen, und die beiden freuen sich auf erholsame Stunden am Pool. Die Wellness-Oase stellt sich jedoch als Therapiezentrum für Paare mit Eheproblemen heraus.

Mittlerweile ist es fünf Jahre her, dass Louis das Cattlemans eröffnet hat. Durch die harte Konkurrenz musste jedoch der Imbiss von Mom und Pop schließen. Um sein schlechtes Gewissen zu erleichtern, bietet er den beiden Herrschaften einen Job an – mit unerwarteten Folgen. Derweil schwebt Evan auf Wolke 7, denn seine Klassenkameradin Sicily zeigt Interesse an ihm. Jessica hingegen befürchtet, dass ihr verliebter Sohn wegen des Mädchens die Schule vernachlässigt.

Eddie und der Lappen
Eddie hält endlich seinen Führerschein in den Händen. Nun plant er, gemeinsam mit seinen Kumpels zum Insane Clown Posse-Konzert zu fahren. Leider hat er dabei die Rechnung ohne Jessica gemacht. Indes möchte Louis etwas Zeit mit Marvin verbringen und lädt ihn zu einer Chili Con Carne-Messe ein. Doch aus dem Männer-Wochenende wird nichts, als sich Honey den beiden anschließt.

Louis möchte seinen 40. Geburtstag bei einem Camping-Ausflug in der Wildnis feiern. Die Jungs sind entsetzt, denn sie können mit dem, was sich Louis erhofft – der weite Himmel, das raue Land, die tiefen Emotionen – überhaupt nichts anfangen. Sie fassen deshalb den Entschluss, ihm diese Idee so schnell wie möglich auszureden. Auch Jessica steht vor einem Problem: Was soll sie ihrem Ehemann bloß zum runden Geburtstag schenken?

Das Auge des Fischs
Die Huangs haben Elaine, Julius und deren Sohn Horace zum chinesischen Neujahrsfest eingeladen. Schon nach wenigen Minuten wird klar, dass sich Julius und Horace nicht gerade grün sind. Als wenig später eine Schlägerei zwischen den beiden im Garten entbrennt, schlägt Emery, der offenbar auch Probleme mit seinem Dad hat, die gleiche Vorgehensweise vor. Indessen versucht Elaine, Jessica zu helfen, ihr Verhältnis zu Grandma zu verbessern. Diese strebt jedoch das Gegenteil an.

Die heimliche Verehrerin
Der Valentinstag steht bevor, und Evan feiert zum ersten Mal mit seiner Freundin Sicily. Um an diesem Tag alles richtig zu machen, wendet er sich vertrauensvoll an Louis und fragt ihn um Rat. Jessica ist daraufhin beleidigt, denn sie ist es nicht gewohnt, dass Evan seinen Vater ihr vorzieht. Indes bittet Eddie Honey um Hilfe: Bei einer Auslieferungstour hat er ein anonymes Liebes-Briefchen zugesteckt bekommen. Die beiden machen sich auf die Suche nach der heimlichen Verehrerin.

Die perfekte Niederlage
Jessica heftet sich an die Fersen von Principal Hunter, um alles über seine Tätigkeit zu erfahren. Hunter ist recht bald von seinem Schatten genervt. Die Situation eskaliert jedoch, als Jessica erfährt, dass ihr Vorzeigesohn Evan den Unterricht gestört hat und deshalb vom Fechttraining suspendiert wurde. Derweil ist Louis verunsichert: Machen sich Grandma und Marvin etwa hinter seinem Rücken über ihn lustig?

Eddie hat herausgefunden, wer ihm die anonyme Liebesbotschaft geschrieben hat. Es ist Tina, die Schwester von Trent. Zunächst fühlt er sich geschmeichelt, aber schon bald hat er die Nase voll, denn Tina bevormundet ihn ständig. Evan hat indes bei einem Fitnesstest in der Schule versagt. Er bittet Jessica um Hilfe – allerdings ist seine Mutter alles andere als sportlich. Sie würde sich jedoch lieber die Zunge abbeißen, als das zuzugeben.

Mister Volleyball
Eddie ist wieder einmal von seiner autoritären Mutter genervt. Er beschließt, an einem Austauschprogramm in Taiwan teilzunehmen, um sich endlich aus ihren Klauen zu befreien. Jessica hält das allerdings für eine Schnapsidee und verbietet ihm das. Kurzerhand packt der wütende Eddie seine Sachen. Was ist bloß mit Emery los? Seit Wochen erzählt er, dass er ins Volleyballtraining gehe, aber das ist gelogen. Evan und Louis heften sich an seine Fersen.

Ruhestand macht dumm
Louis überrascht seine Frau mit einem Rentenkonto, das er vor Jahren für sie angelegt hat. Jessica ist entsetzt, denn sie würde am liebsten niemals in Rente gehen. Louis versucht daraufhin, ihr den Ruhestand schmackhaft zu machen. Eddie bereut mittlerweile, mit Tina Schluss gemacht zu haben. Er schmiedet einen Plan, sie zurückzugewinnen. Schon bald sind seine Freunde genervt, weil sich bei Eddie nur noch alles um Tina dreht.

Vize-Mommy
Seit Jessica am College ist, ist sie zuhause kaum noch anzutreffen. Kurzerhand ernennt sie Evan zur „Vize-Mommy“ und überträgt ihm sämtliche Verantwortung. Der Junge ist zunächst geehrt und voller Tatendrang, doch recht schnell vernachlässigt er seine Pflichten, weil er fürchtet, seine Mutter zu verlieren. Derweil bestimmt Louis seinen Sohn Eddie zum Mitarbeiter des Monats. Der fühlt sich mit der Auszeichnung jedoch nicht besonders wohl in seiner Haut.

Mein Freund Osvaldo
Louis und Jessica spitzen die Ohren, als ihnen Grandma von ihrer Internet-Bekanntschaft Osvaldo, einem Alpaka-Farmer in Chile, erzählt. Als sie erfahren, dass sie Osvaldo offenbar Geld schickt, sind sie sich einig: Dem Betrüger muss das Handwerk gelegt werden – und zwar umgehend.

Ohne Eddie ist alles doof
Eddie reist für ein Austauschprogramm nach Taiwan. Louis und Jessica warnen ihn vor allen möglichen Gefahren, doch dort angekommen ignoriert er ihre gutgemeinten Ratschläge. Und prompt bekommt er die Quittung, denn gleich bei seinem ersten Ausflug geht alles schief. Indessen in Orlando: Louis und die Jungs vermissen Eddie – im Gegensatz zu Jessica, die seine Abwesenheit geradezu genießt.

Der Cheeseburger-Bengel
Eddie sorgt in Taipei für ein Verkehrschaos, als er einen Bus entführt und damit das Vordach eines Fastfood-Restaurants demoliert. Kurzerhand wird er des Landes verwiesen und kehrt zurück nach Orlando. Während Louis stinksauer auf seinen Sohn ist, ist Jessica der festen Überzeugung, Eddie habe absolut richtig gehandelt.
